How long a new routine takes

You may have heard that a habit takes 21 days. The best-known study of how routines form found something less tidy, and more useful.

What that means in practice

There's no deadline. Some routines settle in a few weeks; others take months. A slow one isn't a failed one.

A missed day isn't a restart. The study's participants who skipped a day carried on from where they were. Nothing needs to reset.

It's not a curve to chase. The study measured how automatic something felt, for simple daily behaviours. It doesn't tell you how a harder goal, or a conversation, or a savings plan will go.

In UpWill

There are no streaks to keep and no countdowns. Each plan keeps what you recorded, and My Life shows the days something happened. If you come back after a gap, the plan is where you left it.

Plan it with UpWill

Speak or write about your day, and your notes keep your plans up to date. Write what you'd like to make possible and see the plan UpWill would set up.
